The story takes place during a time of economic turbulence. In "The Clock of
The Long Now", Stewart Brand notes that Moore's Law -- the doubling of
computing power every eighteen months -- can in fact be generalized to apply
to any technology which spins off from computing.
And really, this graph is a suite of separate and competing techno-economic
events, occurring at random intervals in time, which all fit under the
general curve of Moore's Law.
