She passes a squalid, squatter's settlement -- It is a jarring moment
of contrast -- Julia's visual perfection in her little red Bemur in the
midst of this FILTH. It's so sad, she thinks. In just a few short years,
things have gotten so bad for so many people. But she and Ben are
on the other side -- the side whose work did not fail.
"Oh, well," She shakes her head and continues walking to the front of
the house, then out the door, down the walk and across the driveway
to her car -- a red convertible. She gets in and she's off...
Out of the driveway she goes. Out of the neighborhood of manicured
lawns, onto the road through a canyon going inland from a Northern
California coast. The trees she drives under have the wild look they
get from the years of relentless trade winds blowing off the Pacific
ocean.
