Conclusion: The Method of Project Development

This project lies in the realm of microtechnology, which is essentially the extension of the miniaturization technology which has been developed for manufacturing electronic components for computers to the manufacture of mechanical machines. Unfortunately, this field is not as remote as that of nanotechnology and therefore probably has a higher status as a "strategic technology", which may tend to keep this technology beyond the reach of an individual artist.

This project will require extensive cooperation with one or more facilities equipped for designing and manufacturing micromachines. There will also be extensive need for expertise in designing hardware and computer compilers and interpreters for massively parallel co-processor machines. I believe that the idea of a cellular automaton parallel processor is unique and that designing a compiler for it may constitute original research.

It is the artist's intent that this project should be managed from the vantage point of an academic institution from which the basic research needed may be most easily facilitated.
