The proton-decay observation tank in the
Kamioka prefecture, on
Okinawa is a million-gallon stainless-steel tank of water lined with
photomultiplier tubes. It is waiting. Waiting for the statistically
remote, but inevitable event in which a single proton spontaneously
decays into its constituent parts. The electronic equipment has been
running non-stop for nearly six and one-half years. Some day, the
event will occur.
